Unlock PDF

Remove a password you know from a PDF you own.

This tool runs entirely in your browser. Your file is never uploaded to our server.

About this tool

Take the password protection off a document so you no longer have to type it each time. Works both for permission restrictions and for open passwords, when you supply the password.

How to use this tool

  1. Select the protected PDF.
  2. Enter the password if the file asks for one to open.
  3. Click Unlock PDF and download the unprotected copy.

This tool does not break passwords. It removes protection from files you can already open — either because they only carry permission restrictions, or because you know the password and enter it. It will not recover a forgotten password, and it cannot open a document you are not authorised to read.

Frequently asked questions

I forgot the password. Can this recover it?
No. Password recovery means guessing, and this tool does not attempt it. If you cannot open the file, ask whoever created it.
What is the difference between the two password types?
An open password is needed just to view the document. An owner password leaves the file readable but restricts printing, copying or editing. Restrictions of the second kind can be lifted without any password.
Is it legal to use this?
On your own documents, yes. Removing protection from material you have no right to access is not something this tool is intended for.
